Vital in defence as well as attack

Since his return from injury, Maximilian Eggestein has been unspectacular yet effective for The Green-Whites in their past two Bundesliga games, which is exactly what head coach Florian Kohfeldt has demanded from him. Even if Eggestein isn’t quite the leading attacking force for the team, he is still absolutely indispensable to Werder’s line-up. The 21-year-old’s importance to Florian Kohfeldt is “difficult to put into words.”

As he was still recovering from a back injury, Maxi Eggestein wasn’t quite back to full fitness for the game against RB Leipzig two weeks ago. But, at the time, Florian Kohfeldt’s hands were tied, as he explained in the press conference ahead of the away game at Frankfurt: “We scraped together all the players that were able to play, so we weren’t expecting him to be at his best.” As well as Eggestein’s performances, Kohfeldt also praised his mentality: “He helped the team despite only having such a short time to prepare for the game.”

Stabilising factor in midfield

Eggestein’s role in the Werder team cannot currently be compared to that of last season. The midfielder is being utilised in a much more defensive position, with less of a licence to bomb forward. “We all have to get used to the fact that he has to drift into the #6 role more often. He plays a really important role and is the stabilising factor in our midfield. Just like he did in the U21 European Championships,” says Kohfeldt.

Nevertheless, the Werder fans probably won’t have to deal without Maxi’s goals and assists for ever. “Of course there will be opportunities for him to go forward more, and to score goals,” Kohfeldt said confidently. The game against Frankfurt would be the perfect opportunity for him to do that. Every Werder fan will remember his incredible solo goal from the home game last season, when Eggestein feinted around two players before putting the ball into the back of the net to give Werder the 1-0 lead. Werder fans will be hoping for a repeat of this moment.
