The final announcement will take place in June, but the summer Olympic Games are already casting their shadows. Maximilian Eggestein, Werder's midfielder and participant in the U21 European Championship in summer, is on the list that the German Football Association (DFB) has submitted to the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA). A call-up for the largest sporting event in the world is therefore possible. “It would be very appealing to me as a player. The Olympics are a huge event that I would really like to be there for,“ said Eggestein.

As a footballer, you rarely have the chance to be part of such a huge tournament, the 23-year-old continued. Whether or not he will appear for Germany from late July to early August, possibly even with his brother Johannes, depends on several factors. Not only whether he will be called up by Stefan Kuntz in five months, but also "whether the club want me to go,” said Eggestein.

He believes that it’s extremely unlikely that Werder wouldn’t let him go, rather that they would be sensible in making such a decision. Like all other Bundesliga clubs, the green and whites will be in the middle of preparing for the new Bundesliga season during the Olympic tournament.

The honour of being called up would nonetheless be great for Maximilian Eggestein. As a child and as a teenager, he regularly followed the Olympics - "especially the really popular competitions at the time.” Whether it was Michael Phelps or Usain Bolt, the Bremen boy still remembers the appearances of many sports legends. And who knows, maybe the Werder first team man can already smell the Olympics on the horizon in his own career.
