Davy Klaassen scored two important goals on Saturday afternoon, one with his head and one with a sweeping volley, in Werder Bremen’s impressive 5-1 demolition of SC Paderborn. But there was no special praise from the coach for his performance. “Davy doesn’t need that,” explained Florian Kohfeldt after the game. But is that the case?

“I do understand what he meant,“ says Davy Klaassen in an interview on Sunday with a small grin, but he clarifies further. “I know when I’ve played well, I know when I’ve played badly, and I also know if I scored a good goal or a scrappy goal.“ The experience of over 260 first-team appearances has given the 27-year-old Dutchman some healthy perspective when assessing his own performance, as well as in assessing his side’s win against Paderborn. “We worked on our attacking play during the week and we took our chances on Saturday in a much improved performance.” Despite this, the performance did not meaningfully change anything. “We’re still not where we want to be in the table,” states Werder’s midfield man.

Three more chances remain for Werder to pick up points, and their next challenge is on Tuesday, at the wohnivest WESERSTADION, where they will take on Bayern Munich, who are a win away from winning the league title. Such a large challenge does not deter Davy Klaassen, however. “It will be our most difficult challenge this season, but in football, nothing is impossible,” he says.
