Third-time lucky, the saying goes, but there was no such luck for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga Home Challenge this weekend. The virtual competition, where professional and eSports players from various Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs go head to head on FIFA 20, has been a fruitless endeavour for Werder thus far, with zero wins from three matchdays. This weekend, Werder’s PS4 duo, centre-back Milos Veljkovic and eSports pro Michael ‘MegaBit’ Bittner, came up against Wolfsburg goalkeeper Lino Kasten and their eSport representative, Dylan ‘DullenMike’ Neuhausen and did not manage to bring home a first BHC win for the Green-Whites.

The contest began with a virtual head-to-head between perhaps Germany’s two best FIFA players on the X-Box. MegaBit and DullenMike stepped somewhat out of their comfort zone and took to the PS4 controllers. Despite taking the lead, Werder’s MegaBit, the defending German champion, suffered a 3-1 defeat to his Wolfsburf counterpart.

Something of a mountain to climb for Milos Veljkovic, considering Werder’s eSports encounters in the first two matchdays had both been won. After a poor start against Wolfsburg’s U23 keeper, Veljkovic found himself 2-0 down at half time. However, a change of formation to a narrow 4-1-2-1-2 and an inspired substitution bringing on Yuya Osako saw the Serb level the score with two almost identical goals from the Japanese talisman. Milos’ change of tactic soon left him susceptible to Wolfsburg counterattacks, which Kasten used to punish the Werder man twice for a final score of 4-2.
