After a solid first-half performance, Werder slipped to a 2-1 defeat away to Augsburg – their second loss in a row. Despite taking the lead and starting the game well, SVW couldn’t continue their strong showing after the break. “I can’t work out why we haven’t played well for the whole 90 minutes in any game,” said head coach Florian Kohfeldt after the game. There isn’t much time for analysis to be made, as Bremen are back in action again on Tuesday in the DFB-Pokal at Dortmund, which, according to Kohfeldt, will be “an extremely difficult task.”

On the match:

Florian Kohfeldt: “After a good first half, we didn’t put enough pressure on Augsburg. It's hard when you are constantly defending so deep in your own half. You need some kind of relief. Our passing was wayward and we were too wild in possession. I can’t work out why we haven’t played well for the whole 90 minutes in any game. We need to start picking up results as soon as possible.”

Niklas Moisander: “This was a game of two halves. We started well, had possession and took the lead. We then lost control and they scored twice. We have to improve several aspects of our attacking game and our defensive game. We know that today was an important game, but we just have to try and stay positive.”

Davie Selke: “We played well in the first half, but weren’t able to stop Augsburg putting in dangerous crosses. We failed to get the ball forwards too.”

Kevin Vogt: “It’s really disappointing. We played well in the first half. It was a tough game as we’d expected, but we didn’t play our part in it after the break. Augsburg weren’t undeserved winners.”

Frank Baumann: “Today was a real disappointment. We had high hopes and were happy to deservedly take the lead. We weren’t good enough in the second half and didn’t play to our best in several areas.”

On Woltemade’s debut:

Florian Kohfeldt: “Nick has been brilliant in training for over six weeks and deserved the chance today.”

Frank Baumann: “Nick showed his quality in Mallorca. You could see what he’s about today, even if it wasn’t easy for him. I’m pleased for him as he’s proven himself in training recently. We shouldn’t put too much pressure on him though.”

On the current situation:

Florian Kohfeldt: “The cup game will be an extremely difficult task. We’ll need a few special moments.”

Niklas Moisander: “The defeat hurts. We came here to take the three points. Our situation has become a lot more difficult now. We need to stick together and sort things out.

Davie Selke: “We have to move on from today and give 100% in every game from now on so we stay up. We know how serious the situation is, but we’ll try to stay positive.”

Kevin Vogt: “Today was a setback, but we won’t be dwelling on it for long. We need to stay positive and look forwards.”

Davy Klaassen: “I feel like we’re improving after every training session. I want to feel like that again next week. We are more compact at the back compared to the Hinrunde, but we need to do more up front.”

Frank Baumann: “It’s a serious situation. We can’t say that we’ve given up. The team is desperate to win. It’s not down to our commitment. We’re just not clever enough in certain situations. We need to change things quickly, else we’ll struggle to win games.”
