For a number of players, the international break concerns friendly matches and EURO 2020 qualification games, but Niklas Moisander is using the time to travel home. After a shortened training week, the centre back will visit his homeland of Finland in order to rest, with the aim of being in optimal physical and mental condition ahead of the season run-in.

The break is a deserved one for Moisander, whose Werder Bremen team remain undefeated in 2019 following a 3-1 victory over Leverkusen. “We haven’t lost in over two months and have even come from behind in some games – it strengthens the self-belief. In previous seasons, we had a lot of negative pressure, but right now there’s a good feeling.”

After the short break, the next task for Moisander and his Werder teammates is the home clash against Mainz 05. According to the 32-year-old, the reverse fixture was Werder’s worst performance of the season. The preceding game was the strange 6-2 loss to Bayer Leverkusen. “This time it is a completely different game and we won our last match against Leverkusen. Mainz are always a tough opposition, but we have the home advantage and will be ready for it,” explained Moisander.

After the Mainz clash, Bremen still have to face each of league’s top four. For Moisander, the situation is different to that of the first half of the season. “We have done quite well in the past against the big teams. We know that the final games will be difficult, but with the belief in the squad we can go into games with optimism. I believe we can beat anyone,” said the defender.

The team is now one step further and fully committed to achieving their season goals. “For us, everything is still possible, in both the league and the cup,” declared Moisander.
