The Green-Whites travelled to Nuremberg for their second away match of 2019 to face lowly 1. FC Nürnberg. Werder took on ‘der Club’ in the Max-Morlock-Stadion on Saturday afternoon and the visitors took the lead through Johannes Eggestein in the 64th minute. However, Nürnberg equalised in the closing stages to steal a point. There wasn’t much for either side to talk about in the first half, which had very few highlights. Werder were the brighter side, enjoying more possession but unable to unlock the Nürnberg defence with a final pass. The visitors were also unable to hit their opponents at pace and Nürnberg had no problems in defence to keep the scores level at half-time. After the hour mark, both teams increased their intensity and started to create chances to score. Johannes Eggestein was in the right place at the right time to open the scoring for the visitors before the late heart break.

Starting XI and Formation: Werder head coach Florian Kohfeldt was spoilt for choice for the match in Nuremberg as the majority of the Green-Whites squad are fit or have recovered from injury following last week’s match at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. Milos Veljkovic replaced Sebastian Langkamp in centre defence while Nuri Sahin came in for the suspended Philipp Bargfrede. Milot Rashica has recovered from injury and replaced Johannes Eggestein in the starting lineup.

Werder Starting XI: Pavlenka – Gebre Selassie, Veljkovic, Moisander, Augustinsson – Sahin – M. Eggestein, Klaassen – Harnik, Rashica – Kruse

Bench: Kapino – Pizarro, Möhwald, Langkamp, Sargent, J. Eggestein, Friedl.

First half highlights:

6th minute: Augustinsson created the first chance of the match, playing in Davy Klaassen in the box. However, the Dutchman could fire the ball straight at Nürnberg goalkeeper Mathenia.

14th minute: Nürnberg create their first chance of the match. Pereira plays in Misidjan but his shot is blocked by several Werder players.

17th minute: The Green-Whites dangerous in goal once again. Klaassen and Augustinsson link up well once again but the Nürnberg defence are able to block the shot.

31st minute: Nürnberg go close to opening the scoring as a cross falls to Behrens at the far post. However, he is unable to direct his header home and the ball falls narrowly wide.

Second half highlights:

54th minute: The second half starts as the first half ended with very few chances and the Green-Whites failing to create much danger for Mathenia in the Nürnberg goal. Augustinsson fires a cross into the box from the left but is unable to pick out anyone.

58th minute: Werder create their first big chance of the match as Maxi Eggestein fires a long range shot towards goal. However, Mathenia makes a smart save to his right to deny Eggestein.

64th minute: Goal! Werder take the lead through Johannes Eggestein! Augustinsson fires across the box and Eggestein is here to tap home and open the scoring.

68th minute: Nürnberg almost hit straight back. Behrens creates space in the centre of the box but fires his shot wide.

73rd minute: Nürnberg come close to equalising once more. Pereira makes space on the left side of the box and forces Jiri Pavlenka into a smart save. The ball then falls to Behrens, who really should score, but his shot goes wide of the near post.

87th minute: Nürnberg eventually equalise through Ishak.
