Werder beat Mainz 3-1 and move up into sixth!

Werder have taken a big step towards ending the season in a European place after beating Mainz 3-1 at home. Milot Rashica put the Green-Whites into an early lead after rounding the goalkeeper, and Kruse added another before half time with a fiercely struck volley. Rashica was provider for Kruse to get his brace in the second half, after Quaison had pulled a goal back for the visitors. Werder are up into sixth place following the win.

Line-up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt made changes from the 3-1 win in Leverkusen before the international break. Veljkovic came in to replace Friedl in defence, and Kevin Möhwald started in midfield with Philipp Bargfrede injured and Nuri Sahin suspended. Martin Harnik started up front in the place of Johannes Eggestein. Werder lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with a diamond in midfield.

3 mins: GOOAALL for Werder! Rashica! Davy Klaassen plays a ball over the top and Milot Rashica races onto it, rounding the goalkeeper and putting the ball into the back of the net! What a start!

25 mins: Florian Kohfeldt has to make a change due to injury, with Sebastian Langkamp coming on for Niklas Moisander.

36 mins: GOOOALLL – Max Kruse! Maxi Eggestein plays a wonderful pass for Ludwig Augustinsson to run on to, and he crosses into the box. The ball is a little too deep but Martin Harnik keeps things alive at the back post, getting the ball to Kruse who smashes in to make it 2-0!
