The goal sent the Weserstadion into ecstasy. With a bit more luck, Werder could have got another and beaten Dortmund. However, Florian Kohfeldt spoke about how proud he was of his side. He also focussed specifically on Augustinsson, who picked up possession more often than anyone else on Saturday: “He’s doing what we expect of him. We’re always saying to him that he has the quality and should be brave,” said Kohfeldt.
The left-back also registered 28 sprints against Dortmund, the most of all the Werder players. His performance against BVB was another step forward for the defender: “I’m always looking to improve. I’m only 25 and I know that I have a lot of room to develop further, together with the team,” he said.
The Sweden international has learned a lot this season: “My mentality is to always be working and giving more and more. Because of small injuries this season, I’ve had to learn to pace myself and take a step back. I can’t play to my limit for the whole time. I have to be more effective and more intelligent to be fit at the right time, especially as I get older.”
Augustinsson has a clear aim going forward: he doesn’t just want to stop people going past him, he also wants to improve his attacking game: “I want to decide games more often. I think that my development is going in the right direction. We’ll get together after the season and analyse how to improve my game.” Following his assist at the weekend, it looks as though Werder fans have a lot more to look forward to from Ludwig Augustinsson.
