Michael Zetterer has extended his contract at SV Werder Bremen. The goalkeeper has signed a long-term deal at the club, but has also agreed to go out on loan to Dutch first-division side PEC Zwolle for two years. Werder have also agreed on option to bring him back to Werder after one year should they want to. Sporting director Frank Baumann revealed the details on Saturday.

After a long time on the sidelines, the keeper got some consistent football under his belt at Austria Klagenfurt in the second half of last season. “Zetti has a lot of potential, so he is definitely in our long-term plans for the first team. We’re convinced that another loan spell in a competitive European league will help his development. We’ll be happy if he can stay fit and comes back strong to Werder,” said Baumann.

Michael Zetterer is also looking forward to playing in the Eredivise. “I’m thankful to Werder that they have shown confidence in me despite my injury. Now I want to fight my way into the Bundesliga squad with some strong performances in Zwolle. I’m excited for the challenges the Eredivise has to offer,” he commented.

The 23-year-old signed for SVW in January 2015 from SpVgg Unterhaching. He played 30 times for Werder’s U23s, before becoming the number two keeper for the first team. The Munich-born man then suffered a number of hand injuries, meaning that he consistenly spent time on the sidelines for two years. He then made 14 appearances for Austrian second-tier side Austria Klagenfurt in the second half of the season just gone.
