Werder edged closer to the European places with a 3-1 win in Leverkusen on Sunday afternoon. “It was an important win today to stay in touch. We knew where Leverkusen had gaps. The team worked massively hard today,” said Max Kruse after the game. “The boys moved around really well, made the right decisions and did well to come out against Bayer’s pressing,” added Florian Kohfeldt. Werder are still unbeaten in 2019.

Florian Kohfeldt: “It was a good football game for everyone here. The boys moved around really well, made the right decisions and did well to come out against Bayer’s pressing. Everyone put everything into it today and we were able to win a game like this. It feels really good, but we won’t go crazy now.”

Davy Klaassen: “We can be very pleased today. The first half was really good. We stood strong defensively and we were efficient up front. We made it exciting again in the second half, but the win is deserved at the end of the day.”

Marco Friedl: “We had to play our best football to win here today. Above all we were good with the ball and we deserved to win. We threw ourselves into every challenge, defended as a team and didn’t let our goal slip out of view.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “We saw the results from yesterday and knew that we had to win today to stay in it. With the first goal, Theo opened up space for Jojo, who then passed to me. We knew that the room would be there and then I spotted Max. The moves were rehearsed. We didn’t have as much possession in the second half, so the game wasn’t as fun to play. It was clear that Leverkusen would keep giving everything, though.”

Max Kruse: “It was an important win to stay in touch. We knew where Leverkusen had gaps. We moved the ball superbly for the goals and took our chances. The coach prepared us perfectly.

On Max Kruse’s brace:

Florian Kohfeldt: “Max is a superb player. His did his job perfectly. I’ve always trusted him and was always sure that he would deliver.”

Davy Klaassen: “Max is in impressive form, and it doesn’t surprise me that he scored twice today. He’s unbelievably important for us.”

Max Kruse: “I try to get involved, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Massive credit to the team. We all pulled together and played really well today.”

On the table before the international break:

Davy Klaassen: “We still need a lot of points to reach our goal, but we’re further up again. It’s a good feeling.”
