Werder ended the Bundesliga season with 53 points. “53 points is absolutely awesome when you consider that we were fighting relegation last season,” said Florian Kohfeldt after the 2-1 win against RB Leipzig. In the end, it wasn’t enough to qualify for Europe: “There’s a touch of disappointment there, because we didn’t get seventh place and that’s all we wanted today. But I’m pleased that we could finish with a win today,” he added.

On the game:

Milot Rashica: “We knew that it would be a difficult game and that we had to win. It was a warm day and so it was difficult to win. We were so close to Europe and it was a good season. We gave everything and got the points too. We can take things into next season.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “It was a good game from us, even if everything wasn’t good. It was a balanced game that could have gone either way in my eyes. We deserved to win in my view. It was a good ending against a Champions League team.”

Maximilian Eggestein: "It hurts. We definitely would have taken 53 points before the season started, it's usually enough. We're disappointed, but we know that it wasn't today that we lost the points. We lost it in previous games. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be today. Despite that, we can say that it was a class season.”

Johannes Eggestein: “We’ve had a great season. The development of the team has been good. We’ll take that feeling with us into the summer break. It’s just fun again seeing football played in Bremen. If we analyse the season, then we’ve definitely dropped points against one or two teams that are lower than us in the table.”

Niklas Moisander: “Obviously we’re a bit disappointed, because we set ourselves the goal of Europe before the season started. But you shouldn’t forget where we’ve been in recent years. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough this season, but we already know what the goal for next season is: Europe. We’ve developed a lot this season. This season we’ve had problems against the smaller teams. Obviously there aren’t any easy games in the Bundesliga, but we dropped too many points in the games against Nürnberg, for example. It’s a shame, but we have to accept it. It’ll be difficult next season too, but we’ve laid a good foundation this season.”

Frank Baumann: “The team constantly played at a high level. In my opinion, we would have deserved it. But it wasn’t in our hands anymore unfortunately. We have to look where we’ve lost it and analyse. We would have taken qualification in our stride and we were prepared. We’ll now take the positives from the situation and prepare ourselves professionally for the new season.

Florian Kohfeldt: “We just about didn’t achieve our season’s goal, but I’m proud of what the players achieved. A lot of the team developed very well. The greatest achievement is that we kept playing our own style. We can also beat top teams. We showed that against Dortmund, Leipzig and Leverkusen, and we only lost to Bayern by one goal three times. We want to build on this basis.”

On Claudio Pizarro’s contract extension:

Maximilian Eggestein: “He’s a legend in Munich, in Bremen, and he’s a Bundesliga legend. I’d be pleased if he stayed for another ten years.”

Johannes Eggestein: “Claudio decides games. Today was the best example. He’s an important factor, he can bring other players into the game and help them during difficult periods.”

Frank Baumann: “It’s important that he’s fit. He knows that the other players want to play. His role is clear again – like this season. We have a lot of quality up front. We feel that we’re very well off despite Max leaving.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “The contract isn’t us saying thanks, despite all of the personal feeling it’s a sporting decision from Frank and I.”

On the penalty:

Milot Rashica: “There wasn’t a decision before the game. We have a lot of good takers. I felt good and I’m happy that I scored.”
