There’s a definite trend when comparing Werder’s points totals from the Hin- and Rückrunde in the past four seasons: 15 then 27, 16 then 29, 15 then 23, and 17 then 26. The Green-Whites tend to have a strong second half of the season. “You still have to pick up the points,” said Sebastian Langkamp.

Werder usually find themselves towards the bottom of the table at the start of a new year, but this year is different. Werder began the second half of the season with 22 points while sat in tenth place, which they improved upon with their 1-0 over Hannover on Saturday. “We now have the opportunity to achieve something bigger; something that we have found hard to come by in the last few seasons,” said Langkamp on the day after the match.

In terms of centre-backs, Werder are still under pressure, but a “positive pressure”. With a great start to the Rückrunde, Werder can catapult themselves to the top third of the table and challenge for their target of a European place. A good understanding and positive pressure “can carry us,” according to Langkamp.

The success in Hannover and positive Rückrunde performances in recent years does not automatically guarantee wins, however. “We can’t allow ourselves to relax,” warned the 31-year-old. “We have to do everything we can to win. That was what we lacked especially during the middle section of the Hinrunde.” A home win against Frankfurt next Saturday would be a good step for another good second half of the season.
