Maximilian Eggestein is at the top. With six goals so far this season, he’s Werder’s leading goalscorer. By his side in central midfield, Davy Klaassen is not happy with his own goal return. “I have to score more goals that I have at the moment,” he said. Klaassen has scored twice in the league and once in the DFB-Pokal.

Klaassen knew that he’d get fewer chances in the Bundesliga than he did playing for Ajax in the Eredivisie. The midfielder scored 55 times in 180 games for his former club. In 109 of these games, however, he played as an attacking midfielder behind the strikers. “At Ajax, I was in front of goal five or ten times per game. That’s different in the Bundesliga,” he said.

It would be wrong to judge Klaassen just on his goal return. Only Max Kruse has created more chances than the Dutchman, and Klaassen has also run the second-most miles at the club. Against Frankfurt, Klaassen had to do more defensive work than attacking: “Who goes forward more changes from game to game and opponent to opponent. I can still improve,” added the midfielder.

Eggestein and Klaassen work best together when they’re both playing in central midfield, and have played there together in all 21 games this season. Klaassen also had something to say about his midfield partner: “He should extend his contract. I tell him every day. Hopefully he hears me,” he laughed.
