Important, deserved, and a little bit “crazy”

There was a feeling that Werder should have wrapped up the game against Hannover earlier, but they fully deserved the three points. “It’s crazy that it only finished 1-0,” said Florian Kohfeldt after the game. Despite the missed chances, the Werder head coach was pleased with his team: “I saw the consistency that we needed today. I had a feeling. The boys wanted to win.” Werder had 23 shots today and just one went in. But that’s all they needed.

On the victory:

Florian Kohfeldt: “On the whole, I’m pleased. It’s not easy to say where you stand and how you’ll start again after four weeks off. The conditions today were very different to the training camp in South Africa, and there were different requirements. You never know how it’ll go. I think that we deserved to win the game. When you leave it open until the end, it’s always dangerous. Hannover never gave up, so it was exciting.”

Niklas Moisander: “It was a massively important win. We knew that Hannover were in a difficult situation, so they’d throw everything at it. The three points are good for our self-confidence and the upcoming games in the next few weeks.”

Martin Harnik: “It was a great performance from the team. It’s class to put in such a good performance away from home.”

On converting chances:

Florian Kohfeldt: “If it were 1-1, we’d have to talk about it, but it’s not as intense at 1-0. We created a lot of chances for ourselves, but we were denied by Hannover’s superb keeper Michael Esser. It’s unbelievable how he played today, for example with the shot from Milot Rashica in the one-on-one.”

Martin Harnik: “Michael Esser had a blinder today and we really warmed him up. In the end we scored and won, so we don’t need to spend ages talking about chance conversion.”

Milot Rashica: “We had so many good chances like in the games in the Hinrunde. We could and should have finished the game off earlier. It could have been 3-0 at half time. At the end of the day, we can be happy that we scored and won the game, so it doesn’t matter.”

On Milot Rashica’s winning goal:

Florian Kohfeldt: “Milot won the game for us today. I’m pleased for him and it’ll do him good. He didn’t score a wonder goal, and I’d have liked to see his volley go in but it didn’t. That happens sometimes. We’ve spoken a lot in the past few weeks. I’ve not just put my arm around him, I’ve been critical of him as well. He’s on the right track and I’m looking forward to what’s to come from him.”

Martin Harnik: “It was an important goal and a good game from him. I know what it’s like from my own experience when you don’t score and doubt yourself. He can always be sure he’ll get encouragement in the dressing room. We’re here for him.”

Milot Rashica: “I’m very happy. It feels good to start the second half of the season like that. Missing chances was last year. Now it’s a new year with new opportunities. The rest is in the past. Today I just followed the move right to the end, was in the right place, and finished.

On the Frankfurt game:

Florian Kohfeldt: “Both teams play offensively and always want to score. I think we can look forward to an exciting, open game in the Weserstadion.”

Niklas Moisander: “Frankfurt are a great team, they’re playing some really good football at the moment. But they have to come to the Weserstadion and that’s difficult for any team.”

Martin Harnik: “We want to go again and get a win at home, but we know the difficulty of the task. The coach will give us a good plan.”
