It is now down to Lena Goeßling, who will conduct the DFB-Pokal semi-final draw in Dortmund on Sunday (18:00 CEST), to make this dream become a reality for Green-Whites fans. The draw will take place as Werder kick off in Mönchengladbach. “It would be amazing if we were able to win in Hamburg to reach the final in Berlin. It is in our hands so we will have to do our homework,” stressed Marco Friedl following the victory in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday evening.
Werder last played Hamburger SV in the DFB-Pokal was in 2009 when the two sides met four times in just 19 days. Green-Whites fans haven’t forgotten this special match which Werder won 4-2 on penalties. The hero of the hour proved to be Tim Wiese as the Werder goalkeeper made three saves in the shoot-out before famously running to the away block to celebrate with the travelling supporters.
“If we were to play Hamburg in the semi-finals, this would be quite similar circumstances to our last DFB-Pokal triumph. On that cup run, we also played several matches away from home including a last sixteen trip to Dortmund (same as this season) and a semi-final away at HSV,” remembers Werder sporting director Frank Baumann. He is certainly optimistic for whichever team Werder is given in Sunday’s draw. “If we have to travel to Munich, that wouldn’t be a bad thing – we will be prepared anyway.” Werder could potentially face FC Bayern twice in four days should the two teams be drawn together.
