Yuya Osaka voted Japanese footballer of the year

Werder Bremen’s Yuya Osako has won Japan’s annual “Footballer of the Year“ award for 2018 in a survey carried out across 160 Japanese sportswriters. “Of course, I’m very proud of this accolade. It’s something very special for me,“ the 28-year-old told WERDER.DE. “My teammates deserve the award too, because we can only be successful as a team.”

Yuya Osako has represented the Japan national team over the last year, playing 12 games with four being in Russia at the World Cup. His highlight of the year was scoring the winner in the 2-1 victory over Columbia during the group stages of the World Cup.

Osako is the third Japanese player in history to play in a league outside Japan and to win this award. For the first half of the year of 2018, Osako played for FC Köln and scored three Bundesliga goals and claimed two assists. Since his transfer to Werder, the forward has played 15 goals in which he has scored four goals and claimed one assist.
