It was a game that Werder deserved to lose in the end in Düsseldorf. “Our performance wasn’t enough to win today,” said Max Kruse. Nuri Sahin had similar thoughts: “You can’t let yourself be hit on the counter like that here. If the game had stayed open for a long time, we’d have won, I’m sure of that. We have to be honest and say that Düsseldorf deserved to win.” However, Werder are still fighting for their goal of qualifying for Europe.

Nuri Sahin: “It was a strange game. We did the damage to ourselves. The coach said to us several times before the game that we need to be careful on the counter and then we concede three goals. The result doesn’t matter in the end. We lost. At 2-1 I had the chance from the corner to make it all open again.”

Niklas Moisander: “We deserved to lose today. We knew how important the game was, so the loss hurts especially.”

Max Kruse: “Unfortunately, it was one of the clearest games of the season for me. We could have made it 2-2 with the header, but it finished 4-1. We were behind them in every respect. It annoys us that we haven’t got an important three points.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “I had the feeling that everything was going against us today. We conceded an early goal and the other goals were preventable. We have to be honest that we didn’t properly get the last few days out of our system. That’s human and unfortunately that’s also part of it. We’re always learning. We also know that it wasn’t a 4-1 game here. We clearly had more chances. If we could have scored one earlier, we would have been able to get another. They just scored the goals at the right times.”

Frank Baumann: “The goal in the first minute was doubly painful. On the one hand, they created it. They showed their qualities: staying compact defensively, being plucky, and countering quickly. On the other hand, it’s important to start a game well at the end of an Englische Woche. Then there are no problems carry the weight of it. It was difficult to come back after two emotional and intense games against Bayern. We weren’t decisive enough up front, then we through everything forward and we were punished for it. In the end, we deserved to lose.”

On going for Europe:

Frank Baumann: “The defeat is a setback, of course, and the fight to get Europe has become harder. However there are still nine points for us to pick up. Even though the amount of rest has been hard, we won’t give up and we’ll try everything.”

Nuri Sahin: “Every game has its own story. We knew that it would have different emotions to the Bayern games. I can’t look three weeks into the future. We definitely have a lot to do. We now have to be down-to-earth and calmly analyse the game, and self-criticise.”

Max Kruse: “Before the season, we set the goal of Europe. As long as it’s possible points-wise, we’re not going to say it’s done. We all know that it hasn’t got any easier.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “I’m not saying it’s done. We’ll try for it, as long as it’s possible. That was a setback, but we’ll carry on. We owe it to the fans, but most of all we owe it to ourselves. We can’t forget where we’ve come from and what we’ve been playing for all season. We’ve got good teams ahead of us. We know that we can win against any team because we play good football. We’re looking forward to it. To be honest the games against teams like Bayern and Dortmund aren’t our problem, it’s the ones in which we just have to pick up the points. We have to be more intelligent, cooler and be on it more. These are the points that you can’t drop here.”

On Davy Klaassen’s injury:

Nuri Sahin: “I hope everything’s okay for Davy. His health is most important thing. I didn’t care what happened after that, it was only important that the two of them got up. Davy was dizzy.”
