Werder Bremen were beaten 4-2 by Chelsea in front of their

own fans on Sunday. Over 25,000 spectators watched an entertaining clash, but

the Premier League side were ultimately too strong for Viktor Skripnik’s men.

Line-up and Formation: Max Kruse operated in the number 10 role, supporting Claudio Pizarro. Felix Wiedwald played between the sticks, with Janek Sternberg, Leon Guwara, Luca Caldirola and Niklas Moisander operating in front of him. The midfield was made up of Sambou Yatabaré, Fin Bartels, Zlatko Junuzovic and Clemens Fritz.

7th Minute: Goal for Chelsea. Eden Hazard picks the ball up from a corner and fires the ball home.

8th Minute: Goal for Chelsea. Less than ideal start from Bremen. Diego Costa and Oscar link up well before the latter converts with aplomb.

15th Minute: Ooosh... Zlatko Junuzovic smacks the bar from well outside the box. In fact, it might still be shaking!

20th Minute: Werder have reacted well to going behind and are creating chances. On this occasion Pizarro plays in Yatabaré, but his effort from the edge of the box lacks conviction.

28th Minute: Chelsea look to extend their lead further. Costa unleashes a powerful effort, which is blocked by Caldirola. Hazard tries to convert the rebound but Moisander manages to clear his lines.

30th Minute: What a save Wiedwald! He somehow gets his hands to a deflected free kick and then Caldirola clears.

33rd Minute: GOOOAAALL! Junuzovic is brought down in the box by Terry. Former Chelsea player Claudio Pizarro steps up to take the spot kick and gleefully slots it into the bottom right corner. Game on!

45th Minute: Goal for Chelsea. Diego Costa clinically converts past Wiedwald from inside the box on the stroke of half time.

Thy grabs one back but Pedro wraps it up

Lennart Thy scored in the second half (photo: nordphoto).

50th Minute: Almost 4-1. Ivanovic’s flicked header drifts over the bar. That. Was. Close.

56th Minute: Chelsea are really showing their class now. A stunning break eventually sees the ball land at the feet of Costa, but his powerful drive lacks direction and Wiedwald manages to get a block in.

65th Minute: GOOAAL FOR WERDER! Lennart Thy tees himself up on the edge of the box and curls home a delightful effort into the back of the net.

72nd Minute: Max Kruse drills in a shot from outside the area but it flashes over the bar.

88th Minute: Thy comes close to an equaliser but Begovic tips the ball to safety.

90th Minute: Goal for Chelsea. Pedro wraps up the victory in injury time.

Summary: Werder stumbled out of the traps and found themselves 2-0 down early on, but they displayed fighting qualities and created some good chances against a strong side. Chelsea were more clinical in front of goal and deservedly won.
