Werder went ahead 1-0 after six minutes on a mistake by Hannover keeper Ron-Robert Zieler. Fin Bartels put the German national team keeper under pressure and instead of just punting the ball away, the keeper tried to dribble his way out of trouble. Bargfrede was the beneficiary of the mistake and hit home into the empty net from 17 yards out. Hannover equalised 1-1 just six minutes later as Bittencourt had a one-on-one situation after a lost ball and he beat Werder keeper Raphael Wolf. The teams went into the changing rooms deadlocked at 1-1.

Werder conceded a second goal in the 52nd minute as Joselu scored to give Hannover the 2-1 lead. But the Green-Whites came up with the perfect answer, equalising 2-2 in the 57th minute. Zlatko Junuzovic was fouled in the area and Di Santo stepped up to the spot and hammered in the penalty. Werder were strong after that but also unlucky with Junuzovic hitting only the left post a short time later. But Werder grabbed the game winner 11 minutes before the end of the match with Aycicek scoring the decider 3-2. In the final warm-up before the re-start of the Bundesliga, Werder came up with a concentrated showing, were aggressive in the tackles and out-ran their opponents.
