Werder Bremen won their first match of the new year. The Green-Whites started their test match double-header with a 3-2 victory over Energie Cottbus. The game wasn't decided until late in the match.

Zlatko Junuzovic pushed Werder ahead 1-0 in the 32nd minute against the third division side. And that was also the score at the break in a hard-fought match. The Werder defence failed to cover Uwe Möhrle on a corner in the 51st minute and he equalised 1-1 with a header. Cottbus went ahead 2-1 just six minutes later through Fabian Pawela. Werder were a bit lucky in the 77th minute as Cottbus failed to convert a penalty after a Garcia foul in the box.

The Green-Whites fought back in the final 10 minutes and Oliver Hüsing equalised 2-2 in the 81st minute off a Zlatko Junuzovic free kick for his first goal with the professional team. Philipp Bargfrede struck a superb long distance shot in the 85th minute for the 3-2 winner.

Reaction to the match:
Oliver Hüsing: "We definitely felt the tough training sessions. So in that regard it was good that we turned the game around. Me personally, I was happy to have played 90 minutes. The team really helped me a lot. My goal to make it 2-2 was of course special, maybe now I can become a set piece specialist (laughs)."

Levin Öztunali: "The result is certainly positive but we still have a lot to improve upon. But we still have time in the coming days in the training camp. For me personally, it was a lot of fun to play with the new colleagues."
