Werder Bremen fought to a 2-2 draw in their first really difficult test match of the pre-season against Champions League qualifier Athletic Bilbao. The Spaniards went ahead through Aritz Aduriz in the 21st minute and again reclaimed the lead through Markel Susaeta 2-1 after 42 minutes. The Green-Whites twice equalised through Sebastian Prödl in the 29th minute and Fin Bartels after 49 minutes. That means Robin Dutt's team is still unbeaten in eight test matches this pre-season.
The Spanish went ahead with their first real chance of the game in the 21st minute. Aduriz was left open in the box and hit the post with his first shot but hit home the rebound. Werder came up with the perfect answer with the equaliser just eight minutes later as Prödl headed in a corner to make it 1-1.

Aduriz was shown his second card in the 29th minute and was sent off. But Bilbao still scored the next goal in the 42nd minute through Susaeta and led 2-1 at the break. Bremen got a good start to the second half and equalised once again in the 49th minute as Bartels hit home a fine cross from Zlatko Junuzovic. The Green-Whites were lucky to have grabbed the draw in the end as Bilbao hit the crossbar in the 89th minute.
Robin Dutt about the match
... about the run of play: "I am pretty surprised that the team could play with so much tempo at the end of the training camp. The opponents really challenged us. Altogether, we did a very good job. The team at times did things how we practiced them. On defence, there is room for improvement but I saw quite a few good things from the offense. Still, you could tell that the days here cost us some energy."
