Werder Bremen lost their test match against Dutch top flight side PEC Zwolle 3-2 in Lohne Wednesday night. Nils Petersen (13th minute) and Niclas Füllkrug (50th) scored for the Green-Whites while Fred Benson tallied twice for Zwolle and former Wolfsburg player Mateusz Klich also scored.
The match began with an early goal against Robin Dutt's team. The Green-Whites' defence did not pay attention in the ninth minute and a good pass from the midfield found Benson, who was alone in front of Werder keeper Sebastian Mielitz and coolly hit home into the lower right corner.
SVW were not shocked by the goal, in fact just the opposite. Four minutes later, new acquisition Cedrick Makiadi sent a superb pass over 35 yards to Hunt on the wing and the deputy captain crossed to Petersen, who blasted home to make it 1-1. But Werder conceded the next goal just 60 seconds later. After a cross from the left side, Benson got past Clemens Fritz and again pushed Zwolle ahead - with the Dutch side going into the break ahead 2-1.

Füllkrug, who came on after 38 minutes for the banged up Zlatko Junuzovic, took advantage of some fine set-up work by Hunt to make it 2-2 in the 50th minute. But the equaliser lasted only five minutes as Klich gave Zwolle back the lead 3-2 in the 55th minute from 16 yards out. Werder tried to push forward for another equaliser but could not find the back of the net and the score remained - a 3-2 loss for Werder.
Reaction to the match:
Robin Dutt: "Nobody likes to lose preparation games, also not us. Today it was clear that the offence and defence did not work together optimally. We were missing the offensive foundation in the first half. Zwolle created goal chances and punished us with good counter attacks."
Niclas Füllkrug: "We worked well but unfortunately made too many errors. We still have quite a bit to learn, everybody could see that today. It's normal that you have to learn things under a new coach and that we cannot go from zero to 100 just yet. We are going step by step."
