It happened in the fourth test match of 2013-14: SV Werder picked up their first defeat as the Green-Whites lost 1-0 Sunday evening at VfL Osnabrück on Andreas Spann's goal in the 29th minute. "We still were a bit behind physically and couldn't maintain a high tempo. We cannot worry too much about the result, but we can't just forget it," said Werder head coach Robin Dutt after the match.
Some 10,000 spectators came out for the test match in Osnabrück, where Werder were missing some freshness after two gruelling training camps and were unable to get past the third division side. Marko Arnautovic had a good chance in the 21st minute but the Austrian was unable to convert. Osnabrück were more efficient in the 29th minute as Assani Lukimya was late getting to VfL new acquisition Andreas Spann, who beat Bremen keeper Sebastian Mielitz to make it 1-0.

"Performance was not good"
After switching ends, Mateo Pavlovic, Cedrick Makiadi, Eljero Elia and Niclas Füllkrug had entered the match for SV Werder. But the Bremen's game didn't change much. Dutt's team played too hectic and un-concentrated and were lucky that Onsabrück's Sebastian Neumann's free kick in the 90th minute hammered off the left post. The final result remained a 1-0 loss for the Green-Whites in Osnabrück.
Bremen were missing the necessary force against the active Osnabrück side, something Sebastian Prödl addressed after the match. "We were not good enough in the challenges. Osnabrück had more energy and were more agile. We wanted to rely on the difference in quality. That doesn't work as we saw today. We are at the beginning of the preparations. But we know right now that how we played here today was not good enough," said Prödl. SV Werder have another chance to improve on Wednesday 17 June 2013 when they take on Dutch first division side PEC Zwolle in Lohne.
