Finally Werder football again: SV Werder however were unable to collect a win in their first test match of 2014 as the Green-Whites lost 1-0 to Dutch Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen Sunday afternoon. The only goal of the match was scored by Sören Rieks in the 20th minute.
"I really have to make the difference between team and individual performances today. I take some details from the match. I was not satisfied with the team performance in the first half. We didn't connect on a high percentage of passes and we didn't play that well up front. In the second half it was a bit better. A couple of individual performances were okay," said Werder coach Robin Dutt after the match.

The Dutch top flight side had control of the match at the beginning before the Green-Whites took over more and more. Cedrick Makiadi was especially strong in winning balls. But the Congolese made an error in the 20th minute and the Dutch scored the decisive goal by Sören Rieks.
There was some good news at the start of the second half as 19-year-old Luca Zander made his professional debut. The U19 right back came on for Di Santo. Nijmegen nearly made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute as Luca Caldirola slipped and fell during a cross from the left side leaving Hemlein alone in front of Wolf but the Nijmegen player only hit the side netting from the edge of the box. Werder had a collective sigh of relief but then there was disbelief shortly thereafter as Eljero Elia had Bremen's best scoring chance, dribbling through defenders and then hammering a blast off the far post. And that secured the 1-0 loss to NEC Nijmegen.
"Test matches don't set you back, they give you good insight. We could see how far the players are altogether and who is ready physically and tactically. The game showed that we desperately need the second half of the training camp. But that also doesn't surprise me," said Dutt, whose team will take on Romanian record champions Steaua Bucharest on Thursday 16 January 2014 at 6 p.m.
