SV Werder Bremen lost their test match Friday evening against Dutch Eredivise champions Ajax Amsterdam 3-2 (2-0) in front of 7,146 spectators at the MEP Arena in Meppen. Despite suffering their third defeat of the preparations, the Green-Whites had a solid performance, conceding their goals after individual errors.

"We actually stood well but then conceded two unlucky goals. There was a lot of light there today but also some shadows," said manager Thomas Eichin. Head coach Robin Dutt added: "The results are not so indicatory, we are in good shape. We especially did a good job in the second half, conceding the goals after our own errors. In the end, I wish the guys could have gotten the equaliser."

The international test match began initially with both teams cautiously feeling each other out. Ajax did have more possession early on and tried to put Bremen under pressure, but Werder's defence stood well and waited patiently for the Dutch side's mistakes for a quick counter attack. The first chance though went to the Champions League team. After some misunderstanding in the Bremen box, the ball landed at the feet of Bojan Krkic, who struck just over the goal from 11 yards out in the ninth minute.

Felix Kroos (here in a challenge with Bojan Krkic) played in the defensive midfield against Amsterdam next to Cedrick Makiadi.

Aaron Hunt displayed Werder's first signs of life offensively, just missing the goal from right of goal. After a goal by Christian Eriksen was disallowed for offside, Daley Blind made it 1-0 in the 39th minute for Ajax. Krkic fed a short ball to Blind, who was able to hit home. The second goal came soon thereafter, this time by Krkic himself, hitting in from right of goal for a 2-0 lead, which was the score at the break.

Werder stabilised their game after the re-start and also had a couple of good offensive opportunities, which they couldn't use. When Dutt made seven substitutions after an hour, many thought the game would fall apart. But the new side was fresh and pushed forward. And while it took some time to create chances, it finally paid off in the 84th minute when Vermeer could only bat away Niclas Füllkrug's shot with Joseph Akpala there to cut the deficit to 2-1. Danish international Christian Eriksen took away Werder's hopes in the 88th minute making it 3-1 as he scored over Werder keeper Sebastian Mielitz, who had come too far off his line. But Nils Petersen did add another Bremen goal in the final minute to make it 3-2.
