SV Werder comfortably won their first test match of the year by beating Turkish top flight side Trabzonspor 2-0 to reach the final of the Tuttur Cup. The Green-Whites decided the game in the second half with goals by Aaron Hunt (48th) and Nils Petersen (59th). Werder will next face off with VfL Wolfsburg on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Tuttur Cup final. "We can be very satisfied because the team played very good. It was important to do the job and we did that today. It was absolutely a deserved victory," said a satisfied head coach Thomas Schaaf after the match.
The spectators could sense in the first half that both teams had trained quite hard in the last couple of days preparing for the start of their respective second half season starts. In the 15th minute, Werder were lucky that Mierzejewski struck only the crossbar. At the other end, Petersen missed a good chance, sending the match deadlocked 0-0 at the break.

There was more action in the second half, especially thanks to Werder! In the 48th minute, Kevin De Bruyne collected a ball in the midfield before Hunt scored to make it 1-0 for the Green-Whites. The game was essentially decided in the 59th minute as Lukas Schmitz had a strong solo before crossing to Petersen, who only had to tap the ball in to make it 2-0, which was also the final score.
"We ran very well and played motivated and disciplined. Defensively we stood compactly and did a good job. Everyone did the job they were given in the last couple days and did it well. Not everything worked out but you could see that we are trying to change certain things. The victory was definitely deserved. I am happy about this performance," said Schaaf.
The Green-Whites will now play VfL Wolfsburg in the Tuttur Cup final, which will be a reunion with Klaus Allofs, Diego, Naldo and co. The game, which starts at 2 p.m., will be broadcast live and exclusively on WERDER.TV.
