Werder Bremen drew 1-1 with Energie Cottbus in a passionate and tough friendly match in which Bremen dominated over stretches despite heavy rains. Eljero Elia gave Werder the lead before Daniel Adlung equalized for the second division side shortly before the final whistle.

The game was very embattled from the first minute on with a high tempo and both teams playing very intensively. Werder went ahead 1-0 in the 34th minute as Aaron Hunt collected a long punt kick and passed onto Zlatko Junuzovic before Philipp Bargfrede fed the ball to Elia, who blasted the ball into the right side to make it 1-0, which was also the half-time score.

Cottbus never gave up and scored the equaliser 1-1 four minutes before the end. After Florian Trinks lost the ball, Adlung superbly lofted the ball over Sebastian Mielitz for the final scoreline. Head coach Thomas Schaaf was satisfied with his team's performance. "That was an intensive match. Nothing was just given away. We wanted to see everyone today one more time and gave everyone a chance to showcase themselves," said the coach. And Schaaf said the 1-1 draw is a fine result considering the fact that Cottbus start their season in the 2. Bundesliga in two weeks. "Our opponents are a bit further along than us. But we presented ourselves very well physically," said the coach.
