Stories aplenty, goals galore and a long awaited comeback! On Tuesday evening, Werder Bremen were narrow 5-4 (4-1) winners in the spontaneously arranged friendly game against second division FC St. Pauli. A crowd of 7, 234 at the Millerntor stadium in Hamburg saw central defender Naldo make his return to the pitch after over a year out through injury. Those who made their way to the stadium were also treated to a glut of goals in an attacking spectacle. Claudio Pizarro opened the floodgates in the seventh minute but Kevin Schindler bagged an equaliser for the hosts (26'). A Marko Marin strike, together with a Marko Arnautovic brace (29', 31', 36') gave the Green-Whites a 4-1 half time lead.

Naldo in action

Soon after the re-start, Sandro Wagner increased Werder's lead to 5-1 from the penalty spot (51') but the second division side hit back with three more goals of their own (55', 63', 83') to make for a tense finish. In the end, Werder, for whom Naldo was involved for the first 60 minutes, held out to secure a 5-4 win.

Naldo: "I would really like to thank my wife, my friends and all those who supported me from the bottom of my heart. It was a long time but it's finally over. I never thought about my knee for a second. I have no problems anymore and it was something very special to wear the Werder jersey today. Friendly games are of course very different to the Bundesliga, but I am coming along with every training session."

Schaaf: "When someone has been out of action for so long then it is a very special moment when he returns. For Naldo today it was all about getting involved again and finding his feet. He did the job well but it was clear to see that he is still lacking a little and that he is not yet completely free in his movements. At the moment I can't say when he will be back in action in the Bundesliga. We need to continue slowly building Naldo back up."
