A crowd of 5,600 fans came out to the An der Alten Fösterei Stadium to see Werder Bremen play to a 2-2 draw against Union Berlin. Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf had a new player for the left back position in Florian Hartherz. The former Wolfsburg player signed with the Green-Whites last Wednesday and he made his debut for Bremen in the starting line-up.

"I was so happy to be allowed to play with the professional side. That was a nice feeling, especially in front of this great crowd," said the 18-year-old, who played the first 67 minutes before being subbed out.
While Tim Borowski had returned to the starting line-up after recovering from his ankle injury, Clemens Fritz took over the captain's armband from Per Mertesacker, who has transferred to Arsenal. But the man of the first 45 minutes was without a doubt Marko Marin, who scored in the eighth and 31st minutes to make it 2-0. The game lost its lustre in the second half and the second division side evened the game with goals by Torsten Mattuschka (penalty) and Silvio for the 2-2 final scoreline.
"We did not play as well as we had imagined. Of course the conditions were extreme but we did not work well on defence. In both areas, up front and in the back, we could have done more," said Schaaf after the game.
