Under sunny skies and pleasant temperatures at the An der Mühle grounds, Werder had a tremendous beginning to the test match as Meppen keeper Marcel Maluck reached behind him eight times after just 22 minutes. Clemens Schoppenhauer opened the goal floodgates while Marko Arnautovic was the top scorer with five goals and Aaron Hunt and Lennart Thy each tallied twice. Kevin Schindler, Philipp Bargfrede and Felix Kroos also scored goals as well.
Even head coach Thomas Schaaf didn't think such a test match start was possible. "That was strong. It was surprising that we were able to start so well after the stress of the last few days. It wasn't just about the goals but also the way we played football. We implemented a lot of what we talked about before hand. Every one moved well and let the ball roll. We can be satisfied with that," said Schaaf after the game.
