Werder Bremen advanced to the Round of 16 of the German DFB Cup with a 2-0 victory in the second round at Chemnitzer FC. Fin Bartels and Franco Di Santo scored the goals for Werder, who won their first match under new head coach Viktor Skripnik which was also the club's first victory since winning in the first round of the German Cup.

Numerous changes
New boss Skripnik changed a number of spots in his starting line-up. The right side of the defence was manned by Theodor Gebre Selassie, who was healthy again for his first appearance in the starting selection. Captain Clemens Fritz moved up to the right side of the midfield. Alejandro Gálvez replaced Assani Lukimya in the middle of the backline with Felix Kroos moving into the Spaniard's spot in the defensive midfield. The most important and surprising change was the playmaker spot as Levent Aycicek was put into the position, making his first start in a competitive match for Werder. Not in the game squad were Cedrick Makiadi and Eljero Elia.

Bartels gives Bremen lead
The third division side from Chemnitz started strong and had the first chance in the fourth minute but luckily Reagy Ofuso didn't hit the ball cleanly after a pass into the box. At the other end, Di Santo gave the Green-Whites their first scoring opportunity in the 15th minute with Sebastian Prödl passing to the Argentinean but Chemnitz keeper Philipp Pentke did a good job pushing the shot wide of the post. Werder continued to play well and took the lead 1-0 in the 31st minute as Izet Hajrovic passed wonderfully into the box to Bartels, who coolly beat Pentke. Chemnitz's Marc Endres cleared a ball at the line in the 40th minute after Pentke let a cross from Hajrovic through his hands. Werder went into the break ahead 1-0.

2-0 by Di Santo
Werder had the perfect start to the second half as Pentke played a punt kick directly to Fritz, who immediately played forward to Di Santo and the striker gave Werder the crucial 2-0 lead in the 49th minute. The Green-Whites dominated the game after that and controlled play, not allowing the hosts to create many chances at all. Werder remained strong and in the end won the game deservedly 2-0. That meant the Green-Whites are in the Round of 16 of the German Cup.
