Werder Bremen exited from the first round of the German DFB Cup with a 2-1 defeat at third division side Heidenheim Saturday afternoon 30 July 2011. Bremen looked good for a while as Markus Rosenberg gave the Green-Whites the lead after 33 minutes. But a missed penalty by Marko Marin early in the second half gave Heidenheim new life and Christian Sauter equalised after 57 minutes and Marc Schnatterer made it 2-1 in the 59th minute.

Rosenberg and Co. were happy about their 1-0 lead.

Clemens Fritz led the Green-Whites onto the pitch as captain for the first time in his 20th German Cup match. Bremen took over the proceedings in the 33rd minute as the ball went though Philipp Bargfrede and Lennart Thy to Markus Rosenberg, who blasted into the net from 24 yards out. And Bremen led 1-0 at the break.

Marko Marin failed to convert a penalty following a handled ball in the 50th minute. And that changed the game almost immediately. Christian Sauter converted his free kick directly for the equaliser in the 57th minute and then just two minutes later Heidenheim led as Marc Schnatterer was quicker to a pass and beat Tim Wiese to make it 2-1. The Green-Whites were unable to get back into the game and exit disappointed in the first round against Heidenheim
