Werder Bremen departed the UEFA Champions League with a victory as Thomas Schaaf’s team won their home game against Inter Milan 3-0 at Weser Stadium in a strong showing. Werder’s goals were scored by Sebastian Prödl, Marko Arnautovic and Claudio Pizarro.
Thomas Schaaf made only one change to his line-up as compared to the Bundesliga game in Wolfsburg with Marko Arnautovic starting for Philipp Bargfrede while Inter rested a number of their stars and sent a B-team onto the pitch. Werder were very concentrated to start the game and quickly took control of the proceedings. The first top chance of the game came after half an hour through Hugo Almeida but Inter keeper Paolo Orlandoni fended the nine-yard shot over the bar. Still, Sebastian Prödl gave Werder a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute on a header off a corner and that was the half-time score.
The run of game harlyl changed in the second half with Schaaf’s team continuing their strong showing against an all-told passive Inter side. The game was basically decided when Marko Arnautovic made it 2-0 in the 49th minute with the Austrian volleying home a cross by Almeida. Claudio Pizarro, who came on for Almeida after 75 minutes, scored two minutes before the final whistle with a long blast from 22 yards to close out the victory.
