Werder Bremen suffered a bitter 3-0 loss at Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League and have now been eliminated from the UEFA competition. Younes Kaboul, Luka Modric and Peter Crouch scored the goals for the English side. With just one game day remaining in Group A, Werder have two points from five matches and sit in last place.

Werder coach Thomas Schaaf was missing nearly his entire first choice of sides with Naldo, Claudio Pizarro, Sebastian Boenisch, Wesley, Tim Borowski, Mikael Silvestre, Marko Arnautovic, Christian Vander, Hugo Alemeida, Petri Pasanen and Torsten Frings all unavailable for the Green-Whites. And Werder could not have had a worse start to the must-win contest with Younes Kaboul scoring after just six minutes to make it 1-0 for Spurs, volleying a cross from the right side past Bremen keeper Tim Wiese from 10 yards out.

The teams evened each other out after that with Schaaf’s side motivated but unable to create many chances. And Tottenham struck again a minute into first half stoppage time. After a challenge in the box between Peter Crouch and Per Mertesacker, the ball landed at the feet of Luka Modric, who hit home to make it 2-0 – which was also the score at half-time.

Bremen keeper Tim Wiese kept Spurs from taking a 3-0 lead in the 54th minute, stopping a penalty by Gareth Bale, after Felix Kroos had fouled Modric. Wiese was again superb in the 63rd with his stop of a shot by Jermain Defoe. But Werder were not able to challenge the Tottenham goal and Peter Crouch pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 79th minute to finish off Bremen for good.
