Werder Bremen collected their third straight victory under new coach Viktor Skripnik with a 2-0 win at home over VfB Stuttgart on the 11th match day of the Bundesliga. Sebastian Prödl and Fin Bartels scored the goals for Werder, who previously beat Chemnitz in the German Cup and won 2-1 in Mainz and have now jumped to 15th place in the table.

Elia for Obraniak
Skripnik made just one change to his starting line-up with Eljero Elia starting for Ludovic Obraniak as the second striker alongside Franco Di Santo. The 40,284 spectators at Weser Stadium saw the Green-Whites' first chance after just four minutes as Zlatko Junuzovic shot just wide from 17 yards out. At the other end, Werder keeper Raphael Wolf made a superb save on a header by German international Antonio Rüdiger. Stuttgart controlled play for a while until Werder fought themselves back into the game step by step.

Prödl gives Werder lead
The Green-Whites grabbed the lead 1-0 in the 30th minute as Junuzovic crossed into the box where Prödl headed the ball towards the Stuttgart goal. Rüdiger tried to save the ball at the line for his beaten keeper but the ball went off him into the goal. Werder were lucky just two minutes later that Christian Gentner sent his header wide of the goal despite having space. Despite the lead, Werder had problems with the strong guests but were able to hold the 1-0 advantage until the break.

Bartels makes it 2-0
Skripnik's team scored the important 2-0 goal shortly after the break, in the 57th minute, as Junuzovic sent a fine pass to Bartels, who unleashed a shot straight away which went off the right post and in. Stuttgart tried to come back and pull a goal back but Werder stood well on defence, showed a strong team spirit and remained dangerous on the counter attack. In the end, the Green-Whites were able to maintain their 2-0 lead until the end of the match for an important victory - the team's first home win of the season.
