Werder Bremen suffered their second straight defeat in the Bundesliga, losing 3-0 at home against Schalke 04 on the fifth match day. Max Meyer, Roman Neustädter and Tranquillo Barnetta scored the goals for Schalke.
Two changes
Head coach Robin Dutt made two changes to his starting line-up with Marnon Busch playing right back for Clemens Fritz while Luca Caldirola replaced Sebastian Prödl at centre back. Bremen youngster Davie Selke had the first chance after four minutes but the shot went wide left.
Two chances late
Neither team really could create much offence over the next 35 minutes. Green-Whites defender Assani Lukimya headed a free kick into the netting five minutes before the break. Schalke missed a golden opportunity a minute later with Dennis Aogo shooting wide right from five yards out. And Bremen had a chance in the 44th but Eljero Elia could not beat Schalke keeper Ralf Fährmann and the game was even at 0-0 at half-time.

Double strike for Schalke
Schalke came out of the changing room strong and took the lead 1-0 in the 48th minute as Klaas Jan Huntelaar passed to Meyer, who out-raced the Green-Whites defence and then beat Bremen keeper Raphael Wolf, who could not stop the shot. Schalke doubled the advantage just three minutes later 2-0 with Neustädter heading home Christian Fuchs' corner.
Lukimya just off target
Werder were close to pulling a goal back in the 57th minute but Lukimya's header went just inches wide left despite Huntelaar yanking on his jersey in the box. Schalke just missed making it 3-0 in the 64th as Marco Höger's low shot went wide left. Werder's Zlatko Junuzovic saved a goal at the line 11 minutes later to keep the Green-Whites in the game.
Barnetta adds third goal
But the match was over for good with five minutes left as Barnetta made it 3-0, converting a counter attack. The defeat was Werder's second within four days.
