Werder Bremen lost their final away match of the 2014 calendar year with a 4-1 defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach, remaining last in the table after the 16th match day. Zlatko Junuzovic scored for Werder while Oscar Wendt, Max Kruse, Christoph Kramer and Branimir Hrgota tallied for Gladbach.
Five changes
Head coach Viktor Skripnik made five changes to his starting line-up. Raphael Wolf returned between the posts after his injury in place of Richard Strebinger. Santiago Garcia, Cedrick Makiadi, Philipp Bargfrede and Davie Selke all started for Janek Sternberg Levent Aycicek, Felix Kroos and Melvyn Lorenzen.

Down 2-0 at intermission
Mönchengladbach controlled most of the first half with 67 percent possession and winning 53 percent of their tackles. The Green-Whites tried to push forward offensively but didn't have the resolution to get through. Werder fell behind 1-0 in the 31st minute as Bargfrede fouled Ibrahima Traore in the box and the referee ruled a penalty. Kruse stepped up to the spot and beat Wolf. Werder conceded a second goal seven minutes later as Kruse passed to Wendt, whose shot went off Luca Caldirola's chest and into the Werder goal to make it 2-0. And that was the deficit after 45 minutes.
Junuzovic and Kramer score
Junuzovic pulled a goal back in the 51st minute to make it 2-1 as the Austrian placed his free kick from 21 yards perfectly into the upper right corner. Werder were back in the game but Gladbach regained a two-goal lead in the 64th minute. Kruse crossed into the box where Kramer out-jumped Caldirola and headed past Wolf from six yards out for a 3-1 advantage. Caldirola was sent off in the 66th minute when he saw his second warning within three minutes. A man down, Werder didn't have any chance to make up the 3-1 deficit and Gladbach added the 4-1 goal with a counter attack score by Hrgota in the 88th minute, deciding the game for good.
