Werder Bremen were unlucky in losing the 101st North Derby at Hamburg, losing 2-0 and snapping a three-match winning streak under new coach Viktor Skripnik. Werder played disciplined and motivated and it looked like the match would end in a scoreless draw. But Artjoms Rudnevs scored seven minutes from time and then keeper Raphael Wolf scored an own goal for the 2-0 score for Hamburg two minutes into stoppage time.
Three changes
Skripnik was forced to make three changes with Franco Di Santo, Sebastian Prödl and Ludovic Obraniak all out injured, being replaced by Nils Petersen, Assani Lukimya and Izet Hajrovic, the latter playing as second striker.
Stabile defence
Hamburg took the initiative in front of 57,000 fans and tried to take control of the match. But Werder stood well on defence and limited Hamburg's chances - though Heiko Westermann had a header attempt in the sixth minute and Mohamed Gouaida had a long distance shot six minutes later. The Green-Whites began to put together good counter attacks, resulting in a good chance by Zlatko Junuzovic in the 28th minute but the Austrian's shot from 15 yards was stopped by Jaroslav Drobny. The Hamburg keeper made two more superb saves in the 44th minute on Junuzovic and Hajrovic. The teams went into the changing rooms even at 0-0.

Garcia clears ball, chance for Junuzovic
Werder's defence was put under pressure at the start of the second half but were lucky to be even still in the 51st minute as Santiago Garcia cleared a cross by Lewis Holtby just in front of Rafael van der Vaart and Pierre-Michel Lassoga, both of whom were unmarked ready to score. Werder had a good chance in the 66th minute as Junuzovic curled his free kick from 19 yards into the upper right corner but Drobny made another strong stop. Garcia had a good header chance in the 79th minute but the Hamburg keeper again made the stop. Alejandro Galvez got to the rebound but shot just wide.
Late goals conceded
As the spectators in Hamburg were all but ready for a fair 0-0 draw, Lukimya re-directed a throw-in into the path of Rudnevs in the 83rd minute and the Hamburg striker beat Green-Whites keeper Raphael Wolf. Clemens Fritz was shown yellow-red in the 90th minute and as Werder pushed forward looking for the equaliser, the Green-Whites gave up another goal on the counter attack two minutes into stoppage time with Arslan's shot hitting the inside of the left post and Wolf hitting the ball into his own net for a own goal - and the 2-0 defeat.
