Werder Bremen finished 2014 with a crucial 2-1 victory at home over Borussia Dortmund in their final match of the first half of the season. Davie Selke and Fin Bartels scored the goals for the Green-Whites while Mats Hummels tallied for Dortmund. Werder jumped to 16th on the table with 17 points.

Two changes
Werder coach Viktor Skripnik made two changes to his starting line-up with Melvyn Lorenzen and Assani Lukimya starting for the suspended Luca Caldirola and Cedrick Makiadi. The Green-Whites were wearing their traditional Christmas tree jerseys in the last home match of the year in front of a packed Weser Stadium crowd.

Selke with perfect start
Werder came up with the perfect start to the match, jumping ahead in the third minute. Santiago Garcia fed Selke and the young striker kept his cool in a one-on-one situation and curled his shot over Dortmund keeper Mitchell Langerak inside the far right post. SVW had a chance to double the lead in the 26th minute on a counter attack but Lorenzen shot wide left. Dortmund gained more run of play at the end of the first half but were unable to create a dangerous scoring opportunity. And Werder were ahead 1-0 at the break.

Bartels and Hummels score
Bremen could not really take control of the second half early on but the Green-Whites doubled the lead 2-0 after 62 minutes. Selke raced down the right side and crossed into the box where Bartels one-timed past Langerak. The two-goal cushion didn't last long as Dortmund pulled a goal back seven minutes later to make it 2-1 in the 69th minute. Ilkay Gündogan struck a corner kick into the box and Hummels headed past Werder keeper Raphael Wolf.

Dortmund, Bremen both fail to convert
The final 12 minutes saw plenty of action with Dortmund failing to convert three big chances. Shinji Kawaga headed wide right in the 78th minute, Wolf fended away Matthias Ginter's shot in the 81st and then held Gündogan's attempt in the 84th. The Green-Whites missed two chances to decide the match once and for all as Bartels struck the left post after a pass from Clemens Fritz, who then shot over the bar three minutes into stoppage time. But it was enough for a victory, meaning Werder will not be last place during the winter break.
