Werder Bremen were unable to snap their winless streak, losing 1-0 at home against promoted side Cologne to kick off the ninth match day of the Bundesliga. Anthony Ujah scored the winning goal for Cologne. With the loss, Werder remain last in the table.
Two changes
Werder coach Robin Dutt made two changes to his starting line-up for the important match against Cologne with Izet Hajrovic playing for Eljero Elia in the attack next to Franco Di Santo and Luca Caldirola starting at centre back in place of Assani Lukimya.
Good start
Werder started the match in front of a sold-out crowd of 42,100 spectators at Weser Stadium very aggressively, not letting Cologne set up their offense and coming up with in general the better start. Still, Dutt's men were unable to create good scoring chances. At the other end, Marcel Risse hammered a blast just wide of the Green-Whites' goal on a free kick in the 21st minute. Werder had a good chance eight minutes later as Cologne keeper Timo Horn couldn't get to a cross from Cedrick Makiadi but Fin Bartels' shot went wide. The guests gained more control of the game as it wore on but both defences held up strong and the game was deadlocked at 0-0 at the break.

Ujah scores
The second half had a turbulent start. Werder had a good scoring opportunity in the box but Di Santo aimed his shot too close to the middle and Cologne's keeper had no problem stopping the attempt. At the other end, Simon Zoller started a dangerous counter attack with a fine pass into the area but Clemens Fritz cleared away just before Dusan Svento in the last second. Werder conceded the 1-0 goal in the 59th minute. Ujah was subbed in just 60 seconds earlier and was fed a fine pass from Svento and then beat Werder keeper Raphael Wolf. Shortly thereafter, Horn made a superb save on Zlatko Junuzovic's shot and Hajrovic's attempt went off the upright.
Three substitutions
Dutt reacted and made two substitutions in the 62nd minute with Nils Petersen and Theodor Gebre Selassie coming on for Hajrovic and Caldirola. And then Davie Selke was brought in for Makiadi after 73 minutes. But the substitutions did not really improve the Green-Whites' game. Werder remained tight and harmless and failed to create any dangerous scoring chances in the final minutes, leaving the club a disappointing 1-0 defeat against the promoted side from Cologne.
