Werder Bremen started the 2014-15 Bundesliga season with a 2-2 draw at Hertha BSC Berlin after coming back from a 2-0 deficit. Julian Schieber scored both goals for Berlin while Assani Lukimya and Franco Di Santo tallied for Werder.

Hajrovic starts
Werder head coach Robin Dutt included just one new acquisition - Izet Hajrovic - in the starting line-up for the season opener at Berlin's Olympic Stadium while Di Santo and Eljero Elia started in attack. The support of the Werder fans was impressive with 8,000 Green-Whites supporters coming to Berlin to root for Bremen.

Schieber scores
After an even beginning to the match, the Green-Whites conceded the first goal in the 16th minute with Roy Beerens crossing from the left side to Schieber, who was not covered very well and had no problem heading past Raphael Wolf to make it 1-0. Werder continued to have problems with the hosts' fast-paced game and Hertha were the better team. Luckily for the Green-Whites, Romy (20th minute), Beerens (21st) and Schieber (22nd) all failed to take advantage of their chances. Werder never really found their way into the match and went into the break trailing 1-0.

Goals by Schieber and Lukimya
Dutt reacted in the half-time break and brought on Davie Selke for Felix Kroos. But Werder watched Berlin score a second goal in the 47th minute as Lukimya deflected a shot by Genki Haraguchi towards to the far post where Schieber was in the right place at the right time to make it 2-0. Werder answered directly back in the 53rd minute by cutting the margin to 2-1 with Zlatko Junuzovic sending a free kick into the box where Lukimya rose highest to the ball and headed in to get the Green-Whites on the board.

Di Santo scores equaliser
Werder added a second goal just 120 seconds later with Di Santo equalising it 2-2. The Werder striker was initially stopped by the Berlin keeper but the Argentinean headed the rebound over the line. The Green-Whites had the momentum and the final stages were full of excitement. Cedrick Makiadi's long distance blast in the 67th minute went just wide. Berlin had scored a goal in the 85th minute but the referee ruled a foul on the play. And Berlin keeper Thomas Kraft made a strong save on Selke's attempt in the 87th minute. In the end, the crowd of 59,672 spectators saw a strong Werder showing and a deserved split of the spoils for the Green-Whites.
