Werder Bremen suffered a 3-1 loss against VfL Wolfsburg in their home match on the 27th match day thanks in large part to a poor start to the game. Junior Malanda, Ivan Perisic and Maximilian Arnold scored for the guests while Sebastian Prödl tallied for Werder to make it 2-1.

Three changes
Werder head coach Robin Dutt made three changes to his starting line-up following the Green-Whites' 3-1 loss at SC Freiburg. Clemens Fritz (250th Bundesliga match), Felix Kroos and Nils Petersen started in place of Aleksandar Ignjovski (injured), Philipp Bargfrede (suspended) and Cedrick Makiadi.

Allowing two early goals
Werder had a nightmare start to their 34th encounter with Wolfsburg, trailing 2-0 after just 10 minutes. The Werder defence didn't mark Junior Malanda on a second minute corner and the Wolfsburg player headed home from nine yards out to make it 1-0 for the guests. The Green-Whites failed to organise themselves and conceded a second goal in the 10th minute as Perisic was the recipient of a quick Wolfsburg counter attack as he beat Bremen keeper Raphael Wolf, who had no chance of keeping the deficit from going to 2-0.

Prödl scores
Prödl took advantage of a mistake by Wolfsburg keeper Diego Benaglio to trim the margin to 2-1 in the 17th minute. Ludovic Obraniak played a free kick from the left side into the box where Benaglio came off his line but not quicker than Prödl, who headed in the goal. Werder were back in the game and Petersen had a chance to equalise the game in the 31st minute but couldn't convert despite having time and space. Kroos was forced to leave the pitched with an injury in the 45th minute and the referee blew the whistle for halftime just seconds later and Dutt's team trailed 2-1 going into the break.

Arnold decides game
Dutt tried to bring more offence into the game with Eljero Elia replacing Obraniak and the Green-Whites had a good start to the second half. The hosts were unlucky in the 63rd minute as Petersen headed Zlatko Junuzovic's corner off the crossbar from seven yards out. Werder were the better team but couldn't take advantage of their opportunities. Assani Lukimya shot just wide off a corner in the 69th minute and was just off target again four minutes later from about 19 yards out. Wolfsburg meanwhile proved more efficient and decided the game with a counter attack in the 80th minute. Wolf made a superb stop in a one-on-one encounter against Ivica Olic but Arnold struck home the rebound to make it 3-1. The guests nearly scored again in the 87th minute but Werder's Luca Caldirola cleared away Daniel Caligiuri's shot at the line.
