Werder Bremen failed to hold an early lead in losing their away match against Schalke 04 3-1 on the 12th match day of the Bundesliga. Felix Kroos put the Green-Whites ahead but Kevin-Prince Boateng scored two goals and Jefferson Farfan added one for Schalke. Werder are eighth on the table with 15 points.

No changes
Werder head coach Robin Dutt did not make any changes to his line-up from last weekend's 3-2 win over Hannover 96. Bremen had the first chance of the match after 14 minutes but Aaron Hunt's shot went over the bar. Schalke were close to taking the lead three minutes later but Werder keeper Sebastian Mielitz made a strong save on Julian Draxler's attempt.

Kroos scores
Werder grabbed the lead 1-0 after 22 minutes as Kroos snatched the ball from Roman Neustädter and then beat Schalke keeper Timo Hildebrand to the far right post for his first Bundesliga goal. Hildebrand kept his team close eight minutes later, coming out to grab a cross by Cedrick Makiadi just before Zlatko Junuzovic could get to it. And the Green-Whites were up 1-0 at the break.

Boateng equalises
Werder conceded the 1-1 equaliser in the 64th minute as Julian Draxler's cross went to Boateng, who beat Lukas Schmitz in the air and headed past Mielitz. Schalke increased the pressure after that and forced the Green-Whites into more and more problems.

Double strike
Mielitz was forced to reach behind him for a second time five minutes before the final whistle. Boateng once again struck in the 85th minute, heading in a cross from Christian Fuchs to make it 2-1. Schalke secured the victory for good as Jefferson converted a pass from Draxler a minute into injury time for a 3-1 lead - and a loss for Werder Bremen.
