Werder Bremen lost their home match against 1. FSV Mainz 05 3-2 on the 13th match day of the Bundesliga. Eljero Elia and Franco Di Santo scored for the Green-Whites while Nicolai Müller tallied once for the guests and Shinji Okazaki struck twice. Werder dropped from 10th to 12th on the table after the defeat.
Mainz lead through Müller
Head coach Robin Dutt changed his starting line-up in two positions with Di Santo and Davie Selke filling in for the injured Zlatko Junuzovic and suspended Santiago Garcia. Werder were not concentrated from the beginning and fell behind 1-0 after seven minutes. Sebastian Mielitz was too far from his line and Müller lofted his shot over Mielitz and in.

Okazaki makes it 2-0
Mainz doubled the lead to 2-0 in the 17th minute as Zdenek Pospech's looping shot went off the crossbar and into the path of Okazaki and the Japanese international hit home. The Green-Whites missed a good chance in the 22nd minute as Assani Lukimya's header went off the right post from three yards out. Selke was close in the 23rd minute and Di Santo had a chance at the half hour mark. Dutt's team went into the break trailing 2-0 after 45 minutes.
Chance for Di Santo
Di Santo was close again six minutes after the break but Mainz keeper Loris Karius made a strong reaction save. Werder had worked their way into the game but Karius stopped Aaron Hunt on two chances in the 67th minute. Mainz took advantage of Bremen's ineffectiveness and pushed the lead to 3-0 through Okazaki in the 70th minute, hitting home a cross.
Werder's double strike
Werder appeared to be the certain losers but made things interesting with a double strike in the final minutes. Elia scored off a Di Santo pass in the 85th minute to make it 3-1. And then Di Santo headed in an Elia cross in the 90th minute to trim the margin to 3-2. But the late rally was not enough and Bremen had to accept a 3-2 defeat.
