Werder Bremen suffered their second straight Bundesliga defeat away from home, losing 4-1 against Borussia Mönchengladbach at a sold-out Borussia Park. Harvard Nordveit's own goal was Werder's only score while Juan Arango, Raffel, Max Kruse and Patrick Hermann tallied for Gladbach.

Head coach Robin Dutt made four changes to his starting line-up with captain Clemens Fritz returning to the right back position after missing two weeks injured with Theo Gebre Selassie going to the left side and Luca Caldirola moving to a centre back spot. Assani Lukimya stayed on the bench, just like Mehmet Ekici, Marko Arnautovic and Özkan Yildirim in favour of Felix Kross at centre back, Eljero Elia on the right wing and Nils Petersen in central attack.

A while on level footing until Arango strikes

The match featured two very concentrated and attentive teams playing at a level footing. And then Gladbach stroke out of nowhere to take the lead. Xhaka sent a superb long ball from his own half over Werder's backline to Arango, who then beat Werder keeper Sebastian Mielitz from the left side to make it 1-0 in the 36th minute.

Brief shimmer of hope for Werder in pulling goal back

Gladbach started with momentum out of the second half and Mielitz made a great save against Raffael in the 48th minute to keep the deficit from getting doubled. That didn't take too much longer as Mielitz could not hold Toni Jantschke's long blast and Raffael was quicker to the ball than Sebastian Prödl to hit home and make it 2-0 after 52 minutes. While the Green-Whites were hit hard by the second goal, Gladbach spent most of the following moments in Bremen's half. Luckily Arango shot wide from a good position in the 64th minute. The guests finally got themselves back in the game - thanks also to their opponents. Nordveit had just recently entered the match but unluckily headed in Zlatko Junuzovic's free kick cross past his keeper from ten yards out to trim the deficit 2-1 in the 69th minute. Bremen still had hope.

Dutt tried to bring in more offensive firepower in the person of Yildirim. But before the substitute could even take place, Kruse took the wind out of the sails of his former team in pushing the lead to 3-1 as he converted a pass from Raffael from eight yards out in the 74th minute. Werder were beaten a fourth time in the 85th minute as Herrmann raced alone towards Mielitz and beat the keeper to make it 4-1.
