Werder Bremen were hoping to celebrate their sixth match without a loss but suffered a 3-1 defeat at SC Freiburg as they kicked off the 26th match day of the Bundesliga. Nils Petersen scored Werder's only goal after Freiburg had already built a three-goal lead on scores by Julian Schuster, Felix Klaus and Admir Mehmedi in front of about 20,000 spectators at Mage Solar Stadium.
One change
Werder coach Robin Dutt made one change to his starting line-up, keeping top scoring striker Petersen on the bench in favour of Cedrick Makiadi, who came back into the starting XI with Dutt moving Aaron Hunt up front alongside Franco Di Santo in the 4-4-2 formation.
Highlights of the match
Freiburg took the lead 1-0 in the 15th Minute through Julian Schuster. Guedé got into the Bremen box and four Green-Whites were unable to clear the situation. Sebastian Prödl tried to get the ball away but it went only to Schuster, who blasted into the far corner for the Freiburg lead as Werder keeper Raphael Wolf didn't have a chance. The first half lacked highlights and was more dominated by challenges in the midfield. Werder fought to get into the match but couldn't create much offence. After a foul by Assani Lukimya in the 27th minute, Philipp Bargfrede was shown his fifth yellow card because of complaining about the call. And the Freiburg lead was 1-0 at the break.

Freiburg add two more goals
Freiburg doubled the advantage eight minutes after the re-start as Mehmedi pushed forward with good tempo and crossed from the left side to Klaus, who pushed home to make it 2-0. The hosts made it 3-0 in the 59th minute as Lukimya blocked Klaus's long blast but the ball went directly to Mehmedi, who did a good job beating Wolf.
Petersen scores consolation goal
Werder did not give up and scored a consolation goal in the 69th minute with Ginter hitting Hunt with his pass before the Werder playmaker passed over to the substitute Petersen, who struck home to cut the gap to 3-1. With the poorest showing in the second half of the season, Werder remained on 29 points in 12th place. The Green-Whites could drop to 13th place if Eintracht Frankfurt win this weekend. Werder hope to rebound on Tuesday 25 March 2014 in a match-up with Wolfsburg at 8 p.m. at Bremen's Weser Stadium. Bargfrede will miss the match suspended.
