Werder Bremen never had a chance to win as the Green-Whites suffered a 5-1 loss against Borussia Dortmund at home in front of a sold-out crowd at Weser Stadium on the 20th match day. Robert Lewandowski and Henrykh Mkhitaryan both scored two goals for Dortmund and Manuel Friedrich also tallied for the winners. Levent Aycicek struck for Werder late.

Head coach Robin Dutt made a number of changes to his starting line-up with Luca Caldirola replacing Santiago Garcia at left back; Assani Lukimya filling in next to Sebastian Prödl at centre back; new acquisition Ludovic Obraniak making his debut and Aaron Hunt returning from injury and Phillip Bargfrede starting in the midfield and sending Cedrick Makiadi, Felix Kroos and Nils Petersen to the bench. Franco Di Santo also moved into the starting formation.

Dortmund take advantage of Werder's lack of concentration

Werder began the match strong with an aggressive and battling attitude. Bremen had the first chance after 11 minutes with Hunt feeding a heal by Eljero Elia, who passed to a charging Di Santo but the Werder defender could not convert. Werder's defence paid good attention early on but conceded their first goal after 26 minutes with Lewandowski beating Bremen keeper Raphael Wolf after latching on to a loose ball to make it 1-0. Prödl just missed equalising in the 31st minute, heading Obraniak's corner just over the bar and a short time later Di Santo's header was stopped by Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller. Wolf was beaten again in the 41st minute as Mkhitaryan hit from long range for a 2-0 half-time lead.

Worst-case scenario after re-start

The match was basically decided shortly after the break as Bargfrede headed on Marco Reus's corner to the far corner where Friedrich stuck out his leg to increase the lead to 3-0 after 48 minutes. Things were easier and easier for Dortmund, who passed around the Werder box at will it seemed. In the 51st minute, Reus poked a ball through to Lewandowski, who shot too high. Lukasz Piszczek then hammered a long blast off the bar in the 56th minute.

Werder fell behind 4-0 in the 62nd minute after losing a ball carelessly, allowing Dortmund to push forward quickly with Reus healing a ball to Mkhitaryan, who completed his brace. Petersen had Bremen's first chance in the second half but Weidenfeller charged out to cut off his angle. While the guests took their foot off the pedal, Dutt's team would never give up and tried to at least grab a goal. Martin Kobylanski tested Weidenfeller with 15 minutes left and then referee Günter failed to see a handled ball by Nuri Sahin in the box. Jonas Hofmann found Lewandowski for his second goal in the 86th minute to make it 5-0. The only thing left was Bundesliga debutant Aycicek scoring the consolation goal in the final minute.
