Werder Bremen suffered their first loss of the 2013-14 season, losing 1-0 at Borussia Dortmund on the third game day of the new season. Robert Lewandowski scored the winning goal early in the second half.

Two changes
Werder head coach Robin Dutt made two changes to his starting line-up with Marko Arnautovic starting in attack for Nils Petersen and Özkan Yildirim playing for Eljero Elia. The Green-Whites were pressured early on in defence in front of 80,645 spectators. But they stood strong for a while and did not let many chances in front of their own goal. Still, Dutt's team could not create many scoring opportunities on the offensive side of the ball.

Werder lucky
The pressure on Sebastian Mielitz's goal increased over the course of the first half and Werder were lucky that Jakub Blaszczykowski blasted the ball against the crossbar from 17 yards out shortly before the break. Aaron Hunt then cleared the ball on the line. On offence, Arnautovic was unlucky that his shot after a nice counter-attack went just wide left of Dortmund's goal from 15 yards. The game went into the break dead-locked at 0-0.

Lewandowski scores
Werder's defensive wall was beaten shortly after the re-start as Marko Reus played a ball into the middle from the right side and Sebastian Prödl was too late to mark Lewandowski and Mielitz had no chance against the Pole's shot from five yards out, giving Dortmund the lead 1-0 after 55 minutes.

Hunt clears at the line
Dutt reacted immediately after the deficit and brought on new acquisition Franco di Santo for Arnautovic and Felix Kroos for Mehmet Ekici in the 67th minute. But neither of the new players could apply pressure to the Dortmund goal and Werder once again were lucky in the 84th minute when Hunt cleared a shot by Lewandowski at the line.

Chance for di Santo
Werder tried in the final minutes all they could to equalise. Di Santo had a good chance in the 87th minute but Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller made a fine stop against the Argentinean. In the end, the Green-Whites' strong performance was not enough and Dortmund picked up a deserved victory.
