Werder Bremen secured a 1-0 home win against FC Augsburg on Saturday afternoon to continue their perfect start to the Bundesliga season. Mehmet Ekici scored the only goal of the game, getting the Green-Whites off to an ideal start with two wins from two games.
Two changes
Werder trainer Robin Dutt made two changes to his starting eleven for the home game against FC Augsburg, with Assani Lukimya replacing the injured Clemens Fritz (thigh problems) and Eljero Elia getting the nod ahead of Felix Kroos.
Determined Werder
The crowd of 41,129 saw a determined Werder performance right from the outset, with the home side taking the initiative early on. The hosts had the visual advantage, but it was the visitors from Augsburg who had the first chances on goal, with Sascha Mölders (13‘) and then Halil Altintop (18') going close.

Ekici on target
At the other end, Mehmet Ekici went one better and made effective use of his chance. The Werder midfielder took possession in the 23rd minute, jinked past Jan Moravek and slammed the ball into the bottom right corner from 18 meters out to make it 1-0 for Werder. There were further chances at both ends before the end of the half, but neither side could take advantage and the hosts took their narrow lead into the half-time break.
Werder unter Druck
In the second half, the Green-Whites found themselves under pressure and forced back deep into their own half at the ‚Weser-Stadium', as the guests from Augsburg pressed in search of an equaliser. Trainer Robin Dutt's side only rarely managed to ease the strain on the defence, as the game became ever more nerve-wracking for the Werder fateful.
Tense finish
The match was to remain intense and hard-fought right to the final whistle. Augsburg pushed with all they had to offer as they attempted to pull level and Werder remained a threat on the counter attack. In the end though, the hosts clung onto their 1-0 advantage to continue their perfect start to the new Bundesliga season.
